CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Sedation dentistry for those
who fear the dentist

For people who tense up at the very sound of a dental clinic, or who worry about long surgery, our oral & maxillofacial surgeon manages conscious sedation himself.

WHAT IS SEDATION

What is conscious sedation?

Often called “sleep dentistry,” it uses medication to ease tension and anxiety so you can receive treatment in a relaxed state. Pain is controlled at the same time with local anesthesia.

01
Not general anesthesia
You keep breathing on your own, and no breathing tube is used.
02
Relaxed, as if dozing
A small amount of sedative is given intravenously, so you feel relaxed and drowsy.
03
Little memory of treatment
You hardly remember the sounds and vibrations of treatment, which makes it far less stressful.

FOR WHOM

Who we recommend
sedation for

01

Strong dental anxiety

People who have put off treatment because even the sounds or smells of a dental clinic make them tense

02

A strong gag reflex

People who gag when instruments go into the mouth, making treatment difficult

03

Long surgery

Long procedures such as full-arch implants, bone grafts or sinus lifts

04

Several extractions at once

Removing several wisdom teeth together, or several teeth before full-arch implants

Please consult us first if

  • —You are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • —You have sleep apnea or a serious respiratory or heart condition
  • —You have had an allergy or side effect to sedatives
  • —You take any medication (please tell us the names in advance)

Depending on your health, we may recommend another approach instead of sedation. When needed, we plan safely together with internal medicine.

SAFETY FIRST

Nothing matters
more than safety

01

Safety comes first

Once you decide on sedation, you should be treated somewhere that can respond immediately to any emergency. Sedatives have antidotes, but relying on the antidote alone is not enough.

02

Measured dosing

Only a small dose matched to your weight and health is given. To balance comfort and safety, we use two medications with their characteristics in mind.

MidazolamMIDAZOLAM

The most widely used sedative. It has a reversal agent (antidote), allowing a quick response if anything unexpected happens. However, some people do not fall fully asleep or may wake during treatment.

KetamineKETAMINE

Fast-acting with a pain-relieving effect, it reduces the chance of waking that can occur with midazolam alone. Most people sleep comfortably, though some may feel nausea or have dreams.

03

Monitoring for safety

During sedation, watching the patient continuously matters most. We measure from start to finish so we can respond immediately to any reading outside the normal range.

How we are prepared

Surgery room equipped for sedation at Seoul Kwon Dental Clinic
  • —A separate surgery room equipped for sedation
  • —Patient monitors showing temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation in real time
  • —Medical oxygen supply
  • —Reversal agents for sedatives and emergency medications (antihistamines, atropine, epinephrine, nitroglycerin, bronchodilator inhaler)
  • —A recovery area where you can rest as long as you need
  • —CCTV in the surgery room for transparent care

3-STEP SAFETY PROTOCOL

Our 3-way safety protocol

From before treatment until you go home, three layers of safety are followed without exception.

01Measured dosing

Before

DOSAGE

  • —Blood pressure and blood sugar checks; review of medical history and medications
  • —Dose planned for your weight and health
  • —Collaboration with internal medicine when needed

02Continuous monitoring

During

MONITORING

  • —Real-time oxygen saturation, pulse and ECG
  • —Medical oxygen supply
  • —Depth of sedation managed directly by the specialist

03Emergency preparedness

During · after

EMERGENCY READY

  • —Reversal agents and emergency medications on hand
  • —We confirm you are fully awake in the recovery area
  • —We ask that you go home with a companion

DAY OF TREATMENT

Please follow these
on the day of sedation

When the medication is stopped you wake up naturally, and a reversal agent is used if recovery is slow. We help you home once you are almost fully awake, but some effect may remain, so please follow the points below that day.

BEFORE

Before treatment

  • —Fast for the time we advise
  • —Tell us in advance about any medications and medical conditions
  • —Remove nail polish or gel nails — they can interfere with oxygen measurement
  • —Wear comfortable clothes and, if possible, come with a companion

AFTER

On the day, after treatment

  • —Do not drive that day
  • —Postpone important decisions, such as signing contracts, until the next day
  • —Avoid alcohol and rest well at home
  • —You may feel dizzy — take care not to fall on stairs or in the bathroom

We answer every last question, carefully and in full.

We follow a 3-way safety protocol: measured dosing, continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation, pulse and ECG, and emergency preparedness. We primarily use medications that have a reversal agent, and our oral & maxillofacial surgery specialist manages sedation personally.
